The Split Attention Effect
|
|
Information is perceived using the sensory (register) memory. Then, it is processed in the short term or active (working) memory, which is very limited in what it can hold. According to research conducted by psychologists, adults can hold approximately seven pieces of discrete information at one time in active memory and children can hold even fewer. The amount of information in the active memory is called ?cognitive load.? Information is stored (encoding process) for later retrieval in long term memory. Getting information from active memory into long term memory has been the focus of much cognitive psychology research and has many implications for instruction using computer technologies.
